Three people were killed Thursday morning when a 15-foot deep and 50-foot wide section of Highway M washed away during heavy rainfall.
According to reports, a Milwaukee couple comprised of a 56-year-old husband and 57-year-old wife were the first to die when their pickup plunged into the newly-create Ravine. A third person, a 24-year-old woman was killed when she followed a bit later.
The accident occurred in Clark County, about a mile north of Highway I. It was discovered about 1:30 a.m. after three inches of rain fell on an already saturated area and officials weren’t sure if they accidents had occurred during the heavy rains.
Because Highway M is a county highway, it is maintained by the Clark County Highway Commission and is not mandated to undergo specific inspections like other types of bridges.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but the road is expected to remain closed for at least two weeks.
