WILEORC Established to Provide Aid to Injured Police Officers

Law enforcement officials throughout the state have come together to form the Wisconsin Injured Law Enforcement Officers Resource Council. The decision came about in light of the story of an officer who was injured by a hit and run driver in 2009. For several years afterward, he struggled to regain his ability work again.

The officer felt that not being able to work was cutting short his dreams. No longer would he be able to continue fulfilling his passion as a member of law enforcement, which was a disheartening experience. This prompted him to reach out to one former Waukesha County Sheriff Deputy. Both sensed a need to provide this source for their fellow officers.

WILEORC Becomes First of Its Kind

The Wisconsin Injured Law Enforcement Officers Resources Council (WILEORC) seeks to support officers who are recovering from on-the-job injuries. While the public may only see the heroics, little do they realize that officers are not being given the support that they need. This was especially important for officers who were told that they could no longer continue to work, due to their condition.

WILEORC assists injured officers with the following:

  • Support from peers
  • Medical assistance and referrals
  • Legal referrals
  • Financial resources
  • Counseling
  • Scholarship funding

The focus of the group is to allow a venue for others who have been affected in some way by injuries caused on-the-job to lean on each other. It also draws more awareness from the general public, helping them to realize that there are many difficulties up ahead for these officers. Another one of the ways the organization is working to reach out to the wider community is to create scholarships for officers’ children.
