Three Children Struck by Car Near Bay View Elementary School

Three young children were hit by a car Thursday morning while crossing the street on their way to Clement Avenue School in Bay View, Wisconsin.

According to authorities, two 10-year-olds and one 11-year-old were slipped by a car at S. Clement Avenue and E. Wilbur Avenue at about 7:20am. Milwaukee police and fire officials responded, and the children were taken to a local hospital. Thankfully, a spokesperson for the Milwaukee Fire Department said that none of the children suffered serious injuries.

Additional information about the collision has not yet been released, and only a thorough investigation will reveal what caused the accident in the first place.

In a case such as this, the fact that the children escaped major injury is extremely fortunate. Pedestrian accidents, specifically those involving children, can cause catastrophic or fatal injuries. A child's smaller stature places him or her at risk of suffering extensive trauma to the torso or face, as opposed to the legs and hips that a taller adult may experience. A frightening thought, but relevant when you consider traffic accidents involving school-age children.

According to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than one-fifth of traffic fatalities involving children aged 14 and younger in 2012 were pedestrians. Children aged 14 and younger accounted for 5% of all pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. that same year, with 42% of these fatalities occurring between 4:00pm and 7:59pm.
